My sister and I had a good relationship growing up, but I’d say we’ve grown even closer as adults. What does it take to make that happen? I’ve been reflecting on that lately, thinking about the habits that helped us stay connected, and what I’ve noticed in other sibling pairs who seem to genuinely enjoy each other’s company.
I don’t think it’s about being exactly alike, or never arguing—that’s unrealistic for any siblings, no matter how close they are. What stands out to me instead are the small, everyday choices that add up to a real sense of loyalty, trust, and respect. Great sibling relationships aren’t just a matter of luck; they’re built over time, through intentional effort.
I wanted to share some of the habits I’ve seen (and tried to practice myself) that seem to make all the difference. Whether you’re working to repair a strained sibling dynamic or just hoping to keep a good one strong, these are the things I believe help turn a family bond into a lifelong friendship.
1. Share the little things in life
Deep connections aren’t just built on big, life-changing conversations. They’re formed in the small, everyday moments. A funny meme, a random thought, a quick “this reminded me of you” message—these tiny interactions create a sense of ongoing connection. It’s easy to assume your sibling doesn’t care about the small stuff, but often, those are the moments that keep relationships feeling fresh and close. Even if life gets busy, a simple text or a quick check-in can remind your sibling that you’re thinking about them.
2. Celebrate each other’s wins without jealousy
Sibling rivalry is common, but it doesn’t have to define your relationship. The healthiest siblings learn to cheer each other on without comparison. If your sibling gets a promotion, buys a house, or achieves a personal goal, make a big deal out of it. The key is accepting each other for who you are, without trying to change or “fix” one another. When you embrace your sibling’s individuality instead of resisting it, your bond deepens.
